The Google Cast SDK allows users to extend Android, iOS, and Chrome apps to direct their streaming audio and video content to a TV or audio system. Hidden in the wave of announcements coming from Google I / O 2021, Google is adding new features to the Cast Connect library, allowing users to transfer their feeds between devices and even add devices to a feed.
Stream Transfer and Stream Expansion are two new features coming to the Cast Connect library. With Stream Transfer, users will soon be able to move playback between streaming devices. Google says that users enjoy watching content on many screens, whether it’s multiple TVs spread across the house in different rooms, or an array of tablets, smart displays, and mobile devices, users want to be able to transfer the content they stream from one device to another. Cast Connect’s stream transfer functionality makes this a reality.
Once a Cast Connect session is started, the user can switch the content being streamed from one device to another simply by using their voice. When a flow is in place, invoke the Google Assistant and issue relevant commands such as “Move this to the bedroom screen”. This will transfer the content and progress of the content to the affected connected display device.
With the Cast Connect stream extension, users can add speakers to the content being played on the stream.
Developers need to make some small changes to their application to allow stream transfer and stream extension. Once the app supports both features, users will have a better and streamlined experience, especially if they have multiple devices. Adding the ability to add more audio receivers is also ideal for increasing media consumption capacity without having to involve other complex solutions.
