Veteran actor Gavin MacLeod has passed away at the age of 90.

The star, famous for her roles on The Love Boat and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, died early Saturday morning, according to TMZ.

His nephew Mark See told the publication he was at home in Palm Desert, California, surrounded by friends, family and caregivers.

The American movie star is said to have had numerous hospital stays in recent months after suffering from “various” illnesses.

However, it is not known what caused his death. The actor’s nephew insists his death was not caused by Covid-19.

He is famous for playing Captain Merrill in The Love Boat for 10 years in 250 episodes and a spin-off TV movie.

The New York Times said in 2010: “Maybe no actor has taken on a signing role like Mr. MacLeod did with Captain Stubing. Since “The Love Boat” is no longer airing, he is the spokesperson for Princess Cruises. ‘

He has appeared in popular shows such as Hawaii Five-O, The Man from UNCLE, The Untouchables, Hogan’s Heroes, Perry Mason, Cain’s Hundred, Peter Gunn, Charlie’s Angels, That 70’s Show, Murder She Wrote and many more.


The actor has also made numerous appearances on talk shows, game shows, and variety shows.

MacLeod has over 100 acting credits to his name and has appeared in a number of Christian-themed shows and films.

His Mary Tyler Moore Show co-star Ed Asner took to Twitter after hearing the sad news to pay tribute to the actor.

He wrote: “My heart is broken. Gavin was my brother, my partner in crime (and food), and my comedic conspirator.

‘I’ll see you in a moment Gavin. Tell the gang I’ll see them in a moment. Betty! It’s just you and me now.

MacLeod’s real name was Allan George See and he was born in Mount Kisco, New York to his mother who worked for Reader’s Digest and his father who was an electrician.

He spent his youth in Pleasantville, New York and graduated from Ithaca College in 1952 after studying theater.

After serving in the US Air Force, he moved to New York City where he worked at Radio City Music Hall as a usher and elevator operator while auditioning in a bid to jumpstart his show career- business.

MacLeod was married from 1955 to 1972 to Joan Devore with whom he shared two sons and two daughters.

He then married Patti Kendig in 1974 and they divorced in 1982 before remarrying in 1985.

MacLeod has over 100 acting credits to his name and has appeared in a number of Christian-themed shows and films.

He is survived by his wife Patti, their four children and their grandchildren.
