The 47-year-old has agreed to succeed Nancy in his first job since leaving Tynecastle last summer.
The German will replace Jean-Louis Garcia at the Ligue 2 club where he will reunite with Gaulthier Ganaye, the Nancy president, who was previously CEO of Barnsley when they were promoted to the league under the entertaining and energetic football brand of Stendel.
According to reports in France, Ganaye missed Nancy’s last game of the season against Amiens in order to finalize the deal in Belgium, with the move to be confirmed in the coming days.

Stendel left Hearts following his relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2019-20 season shortened by coronavirus.
A release clause in her contract was activated with Ann Budge choosing to bring Robbie Neilson back from Dundee United, who brought the club back to the Premiership the first time around.
