Florida kid finds gun in sofa, accidentally shoots younger sister – fr

LAKELAND, FLA. – A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister after finding a gun that had been hidden between the sofa cushions by a family friend, Florida authorities said on Saturday.

The girl was in “exceptionally” critical condition, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a press conference.

After the girl was shot, three men at the house at the time picked up the children and jumped in a car to the hospital. Along the way, they crashed with another vehicle, causing several injuries. The girl and one of the adults were taken to hospital by a Good Samaritan who had stopped by to offer help after the accident, Judd said.

The gun was brought home in Lakeland, Florida, by one of three men who gathered Friday night to watch TV, authorities said.

Kevonte ‘Wilson, 23, told investigators he placed the gun between the sofa cushions so it was hidden from children. He was arrested for failing to safely store a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of marijuana. He could face other charges, Judd said.

Home owner Chad Berrien, 24, has been charged with possession of marijuana and maintaining a home for drug use, the sheriff said.

Judd said Florida crime victim privacy law prevents him from saying how children relate to adults in the home. An online hearing file showed no case for Wilson or Berrien on Saturday, so it was unclear whether they had lawyers who could comment.

Judd said everyone is cooperating with detectives.

The boy was taken away by the Children and Family Department and placed in his grandmother’s home.

“There was no reason to think it was an intentional act,” Judd said. “It was a baby playing with what he considered to be some kind of toy. ”
