THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS – A Dutch court on Tuesday convicted five teenagers for their involvement in the fatal beating of a 73-year-old man in what they described as a “pedophile hunt”.

“By acting as their own judge, the boys seriously violated the rule of law,” the Gelderland court said in a statement. “With this crime, they caused unrest and insecurity in society. “

The death of the retired teacher in October last year in the town of Arnhem sparked anger and grief among friends and former students.

The young people, whose identity has not been revealed, were sentenced to terms ranging from six months to one year in juvenile detention. Their ages ranged from 15 to 19 years old.

Two were sentenced to one year, half of the sentences suspended; three others were sentenced to six months suspended prison sentences and 200 hours of unpaid community service. They were also ordered to pay some 60,000 euros (US $ 72,000) in damages to the three sons of the victim.

The convictions follow a number of similar attacks in which young people contacted men they suspected of being pedophiles in chat rooms and then attacked them.

“What the suspects did was act as their own judge,” the court said in its written judgment. “They attracted someone, decided themselves that the person was a ‘pedo’, that he should therefore be punished and they immediately inflicted the punishment. “

The court cited text messages making it clear that the victim, a former teacher, said he did not want to meet a 15-year-old boy because he was “too young”.
