Delhi hospital warns of alarming rise in Covid-induced black fungus – fr

A hospital in Delhi, the epicenter of the coronavirus in India, has reported the resurgence of deadly Covid-induced black fungal infections in patients.
These types of infections can lead to loss of sight and can lead to corrective measures such as amputation of the affected area. According to Delhi doctors, patients who contract black fungus only have a 50% survival rate.

Cases of black fungus, or mucormycosis, are seen in more patients due to the number of Covid-19 cases increasing, said Dr Atul Gogia of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. The independent.

“It happens when patients have high or uncontrollable blood sugar. We see at least one case of mucormycosis every day, but it’s nothing unusual, ”said Dr Gogia.

The increase in black fungal infection in Covid patients was reported last year when 12 of these cases were seen in just 15 days.

There have been six cases of mucormycosis in the past two days at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital alone, while cases are also being reported in other hospitals.

“We are again seeing an increase in this dangerous fungal infection triggered by Covid-19. Last year this deadly infection caused high mortality with many patients suffering from vision loss and removal of the nose and jawbone ”, Dr Manish Munjal, senior ENT surgeon at the hospital Sir Ganga Ram, said.

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection that can affect any part of the body, caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. It usually does not cause serious harm to patients with healthy immune systems.

It primarily affects the brain, sinuses, or eyes, but can be found anywhere in the body. It mainly attacks people with weak immune functions or increased blood sugar levels, said Dr Gaurav Kumar, resident doctor at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The independent.

“This is emerging as a major challenge for doctors in the second wave of Covid-19. Some of the drugs used in the treatment of Covid-19 also suppress the immune system. Judicious use of steroids increases blood sugar levels and those with uncontrollable sugar, which increases the risk of fungal infection, ”he said.

It is more common in post-covid or ventilator-assisted patients. If non-sterile water is used in a humidifier bottle connected to an oxygen tube, loads of microorganisms can build up there and pass into the body, causing infection in immunocompromised patients, the report said. Dr Kumar.

Symptoms of mucormycosis depend on the part of the body affected. Symptoms can sometimes go unnoticed at the initial stage or be mistaken for symptoms of the coronavirus.

Some of the common symptoms are one-sided swelling of the face, headache, nasal congestion, spots of black lesions on the upper corner of the mouth or nasal bridge, rash on the skin, blisters or skin blackish.

Delhi is at the center of a crisis unfolding across India. The national capital has more than 90,000 active Covid cases with hospitals at full capacity and an oxygen shortage.

India reported the highest 414,188 new cases in the past 24 hours and 3,915 deaths. The South Asian country is the only country in the world to report more than 400,000 cases. India crossed the bar three times and for the second day in a row Thursday.
