The father of three was kicked and punched in a vicious assault after responding to a 999 call in Scunthorpe, Linconlshire on Friday afternoon.
The married cop, 46, rushed to John Leggott College after reporting a heavy punch involving a 15-year-old.
He and his colleague tried to break him down, but during the scuffle he was allegedly attacked by a 23-year-old and beaten repeatedly.
Police sources said no weapons were involved in the attack, which Interior Minister Priti Patel condemned as “shocking and insane”.
The experienced officer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. We don’t think they are life threatening.
The 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of GBH in connection with the fist fight outside the college.
The 23-year-old was suspected of causing GBH to the brave cop. Both remain in police custody.
The injured policeman, who served in the Humberside forces for more than 20 years, is “stable”, according to a family member.
The parent told The Sun, “I think he’s conscious.
“He had been called to a middle school to make an arrest, and one of the boy’s companions or parents he had spoken to joined him.
“They must have used some force to cause the injuries they have, to fracture someone’s skull.
“Luckily he will be fine, as far as I know. But he’s doing badly right now. “
What happened is terrible
Neither of the two men arrested is believed to be linked to the college.
Home Secretary Patel said: “Assaulting our frontline emergency services is totally unacceptable.
“I wish the officer a speedy recovery. “
About 15 police cars and up to seven ambulances were called to the scene, residents said.
A local woman said: “What has happened is terrible. It seems like you are not safe anywhere these days, even in college. “
Humberside Police Chief Lee Freeman said: “A serious injury to one of my Scunthorpe officers, when they were just doing their job to protect others.
“We support their family and colleagues and will provide further updates when we can. “
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: “A policeman is currently hospitalized with serious injuries, following a reported assault at a school room in Scunthorpe on Friday at 2:40 pm.

“A 15-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man are still in our custody on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
“This is an isolated incident and there is no broader threat to the public. The officer’s family and colleagues are supported after the incident. “
