NHS National Medical Director Professor Stephen Powis said: ‘The success of the NHS Covid-19 vaccination program has not come about by chance but the careful planning and precision of NHS staff who now have administered over 45 million first and second doses in the fastest and fastest vaccination campaign in NHS history.

“With nearly three-quarters of people in their 40s having already received their first stroke, the NHS is opening up to people aged 38 and 39 from tomorrow.

“We must not forget that behind the large number of people trapped, there has been hard work on the part of our staff, aided by incredible volunteers across the country. We are extremely grateful for their efforts.

Matt Hancock, Secretary of Health and Social Affairs, said: “Our incredible immunization program has already saved thousands of lives and has helped drastically reduce hospitalization and infection rates, allowing us to start safely ease restrictions.

“Vaccines are our way out of the pandemic and I am delighted that we are now inviting people between the ages of 38 and 39 to receive their vaccines. I urge everyone to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible to protect themselves and your loved ones. ”
