COVID-19: Dominic Cummings Says Ministers Supported COVID ‘Collective Immunity’ and Lockdowns Could Have Been Avoidable

Dominic Cummings claimed the government originally planned to let the coronavirus tear the country apart in a bid to build ‘herd immunity’.

Boris Johnson The former senior adviser said the plan was to build resistance among the population in the months leading up to September after the illness appeared in early 2020.

In a series of tweets, he said it was not dropped until early March last year after Downing Street was warned it would lead to ‘disaster’.

Boris Johnson’s government reportedly abandoned the plan after being warned it would lead to a “disaster”

Monsieur CummingsThe latest intervention comes as he prepares to testify Wednesday to members of the Commons health and science committees.

Committees are studying the government’s response to the pandemic.

Downing Street is bracing for a potentially very damaging attack following Mr Cummings’ acrimonious departure from Number 10 late last year.

In a taste of what to expect, he said there might not have been a need for a lockdown if the country had had “the right preparations and the right officials”.

Instead, he said that in early March last year the plan was “collective immunity” and that Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s claims to the contrary were “bull *** * “.

He also strongly attacked the media for accepting the government’s denials.

Mr Cummings wrote in a series of tweets: “The media is generally appalling on coronavirus but even I was surprised by one thing: how many hacks took up Hancock’s line that “herd immunity was not the plan” while “herd immunity by September” was ” literally the official plan in all documents / graphics / meetings’ until it was dropped. ”

He added: “Yes, the media is often incompetent but something deeper is at work: much of SW1 (the postcode for Westminster) was happy to believe the Hancock bull **** that” that’s not the plan, ”so they didn’t have to face the shocking truth. Most political hacks believe in the “system” …

“During the week of March 9, No10 was told by various people that the official plan would lead to disaster. It was then replaced by the Plan B. issue throughout the disaster. “

At the time, the government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said if they tried to suppress the disease “very, very hard” it would simply rebound when the restrictions were lifted.

Instead, he suggested the aim was to “develop a kind of herd immunity” so that more people are resistant to the disease and transmission is reduced.

In his tweets, Mr Cummings said there had been “so much lockdown confusion”.

He wrote: “Obviously they are ‘destructive’. But if you have to do it because the alternative is’ hundreds of thousands of people are choking to death and no NHS for months for everyone and the economy has sunk because everyone is hiding in the terror ‘so earlier / harder is better for health AND the economy.

“If we had had the right preparations and had the right people in charge, we probably would have avoided lock 1,” certainly “no need for locks 2 and 3.

“Since the plan was AWOL / disaster and terrible decisions delayed everything, Lockdown 1 became necessary. “

Responding to Mr Cummings’ tweets, a government spokesperson said: “Collective immunity has never been a political goal or part of our coronavirus strategy.

“Our response has always been focused on saving lives and ensuring that the NHS does not get overwhelmed. We continue to be guided by the latest scientific advice. ”
