Chicago has released 1,000 feral cats into the city since 2012 to fight its reputation as the rat capital of the United States.

The Cats at Work program, run by an animal shelter, the Tree House Humane Society, uses neutered cats to tackle the rodent problem.

“Cats are placed two or three at a time in residential or commercial environments to provide environmentally friendly rodent control,” Tree House said, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.

“Property and business owners provide food, water, shelter and welfare for the cats who work for them. In most cases, our cats at work grow up to be beloved members of the family or team and some even have their own Instagram page. “

Sarah Liss, of Tree House, said cats don’t usually eat a lot of rats.

“They actually dissuade them with their pheromones. That’s enough to keep the rats away, ”Liss said, according to WGN.

Pest control company Orkin ranked U.S. regions based on the number of new rodent treatments performed from September 2019 to August 31, 2020. Chicago won the title for the sixth consecutive year.
