Thomas Tuchel insisted it was a tough decision to leave Tammy Abraham out of Chelsea’s FA Cup final squad.

The England international has featured prominently during Frank Lampard’s tenure, but has fallen dramatically in the pecking order since Tuchel’s appointment in January.

Despite his lack of recent opportunities, the 23-year-old remains his club’s top scorer this season having found the back of the net 12 times in all competitions.

Abraham scored his first senior treble in the fourth round against Luton, which turned out to be Lampard’s last game at the helm, and also scored the winner in a 1-0 fifth-round victory over Barnsley at Oakwell.

Tuchel, however, did not reward the striker for his exploits in the competition with a place in his squad on Saturday, choosing to start with Timo Werner up front, before introducing Olivier Giroud in the finals as Chelsea went on to start. attempted, but ultimately failed, to find an equalizer goal.

Asked after the game if Abraham just wasn’t a player for him, Tuchel told Stadium Astro: “No, these are just tough decisions on a match day where you can only name 18 players. “

This explanation is, however, unlikely to pacify Abraham, who has reportedly sparked significant transfer interest from West Ham, or his partner, Leah Monroe, who slammed Tuchel for his decision in an angry rant on Instagram ahead of the game.

She wrote: “How the hell do you make the decision to let your top scorer out of the squad for a final? Monroe posted on her Instagram Stories, before deleting the post.

“The same person who even scored the goals to qualify for this competition?”

“It does not mean anything.
