Husband and wife: This comes three years after James’ wife Melinda (pictured together) passed away in May 2018 and a year after the radio host revealed he was also battling cancer.
James ‘wife Melinda died in May 2018, and he told MailOnline at the time of his diagnosis:’She is not expected to live very long, it may take weeks or months.
“She is in treatment and I cannot let go of this last ray of hope. But the doctors say I have to face the facts. She is dying. The thought of losing her is so painful that it’s hard to even contemplate.
Melinda went to her GP in September 2017, after feeling sick and having a cough.
She said, “I thought it was just a virus, but the doctor found an infection in my lower and left lung and ear. I was prescribed antibiotics and sent home.
Information? James responded to a follower by saying “we’ve been together for a long time,” but it was not clear whether he was referring to his radio co-host Ash Gould or his new partner.
When they weren’t working, Melinda returned and was prescribed another course, which also didn’t work, before being sent for a chest x-ray.
She said: “I was getting more and more tired. At one point, I really doubted myself. I thought, “It’s in your head, Melinda. I thought it was the winter blues.
“But when I saw the face of the x-ray machine, I immediately knew something was wrong. The next day I was told I needed more testing.
“By the time I was told it was cancer in December, I already knew it. Don’t ask me how, but I did. I have stage four lung cancer with secondary cancer scattered here, there and everywhere.
Best wishes: Several of James’ followers sent their congratulations after sharing the news
“It’s in my bones, my spine and my lymph nodes. He went ping, everywhere. It was a huge shock. You talk about three months between perfect health and now, when I sleep almost 24 hours a day. It certainly took hold of me.
She died a few months later, in May 2018.
James had hoped Melinda could overcome the prognosis, as he had done 18 years ago when he was told he had a kidney tumor the size of a soccer ball.
He said: “They weren’t sure they could operate. I thought I was going to die.
After beating the odds and having a kidney removed, he created Kidney Cancer UK, a charity that helps support people with the disease and their loved ones.
James has also been very outspoken about his own health issues in recent years, revealing in 2020 that he found out he had cancer of the spine, brain and kidneys.

He said he was considering euthanasia at the “place in Switzerland” after being diagnosed – just two years after losing his wife Melinda to the devastating illness.
He previously said he initially considered the Dignitas Assisted Suicide Clinic after the thought “so much to be done with” was the first to cross his mind.
But the star’s friends have said they should ‘throw a party’ in Britain instead of going abroad.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the Celebrity Big Brother contestant insisted his attitude is “not about courage” and that “you just have to keep going”.
He said: “I feel really good since I started the treatment, I don’t want any of those sad voices that I probably sound like and sound like I normally do. “
He added, “You don’t know what life has to throw at you. So, it is not a question of bravery by the way.
“It’s just a matter of, in all of our lives we’re all going to come to a point where our health won’t be what it is when we’re at our peak performance period. You just have to deal with it. You can’t do anything else.
Speaking on the morning news show after his diagnosis in 2020, he added: “You could go there in Switzerland. And I thought that because of all the people I had seen suffering from the disease in my day, I couldn’t really be bothered.
“And then friends of mine said, well we’ll have a party, let’s do it here instead of going to Switzerland.” He then revealed that he was receiving both immunotherapy and hormone replacement therapy.
The pioneer broadcaster rose to prominence in the 1980s when he established himself as host of the James Whale radio show in Leeds, which airs on Radio Aire and ITV.
