British Columbia plans to offer Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children 12 and older – fr

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Children 12 and older in British Columbia could receive the COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the school year.

Provincial health administrator Dr. Bonnie Henry says the province is working to include children in this age group in the vaccine rollout. This follows Pfizer vaccine approval for children 12 years of age and older.

Health Canada’s approval was approved earlier on Wednesday, saying it is effective immediately and, if the provinces so wish, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine could begin being administered immediately to children in the age group. approved.

“While younger people are less likely to suffer from severe cases of COVID-19, having access to a safe and effective vaccine will help control the spread of the disease to their families and friends, some of whom may be at higher risk of complications, ”Dr. Supriya Sharma, Chief Medical Advisor for Health Canada, said Wednesday.

“It will also support the return to a more normal life for our children, who have had a difficult time over the past year,” she added.

The drug manufacturer is expected to provide additional information on the safety, efficacy and quality of the vaccine to Health Canada under the conditions set out in the agency’s interim order.

Sharma says data from trials in children between the ages of 12 and 15 showed that after the second dose, Pfizer’s vaccine was 100% effective in preventing COVID-19.

“In the group that did not receive the vaccine, there were 18 cases of COVID-19, and in the group that received the vaccine, there were zero,” Sharma explained, adding that there were 1000 participants in each group.

Since the start of the pandemic, around 20% of COVID-19 cases have been reported in people under the age of 19, she adds.

Trials are underway by Pfizer and other drug makers for other age groups, including children as young as six months old. A further extension of eligibility could take place as early as the fall.
