Tens of thousands of people gathered in more than 200 cities and towns across Brazil on Saturday to protest President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed some 460,000 people in the country, according to the Guardian.
The big picture: The far-right leader has consistently downplayed the importance of the pandemic as cases soar with hospitals overwhelmed. Saturday’s protests, organized by left-wing parties, unions and student groups, remained peaceful in most towns, but police fired tear gas and rubber bullets in northeast Recife , Reuters note.
