York died on May 19 after a brief and unexpected illness, according to a local obituary. Paraplegic since 1988, York grew up in Ohio, but moved to California to pursue a career in the film and television industry.
York first appeared as Billy, the property manager of the Dunder Mifflin office building, in Office“The Injury” from season 2 by Michael Scott, with Michael Scott supporting the wheelchair user as an example of those with a disability – like George Foreman’s toasted foot, for example. But Billy was too optimistic and positive for Michael’s needs, and Michael quickly embarrassed himself and cursed Billy (of course). Billy continued to be a recurring foil for Michael in the seasons to come, returning for a total of four episodes. York appeared again as Billy in the Season 2 finale “Casino Night” as well as the Season 4 premiere of “Fun Run” and “Dream Team” of Season 5.
The actor’s other TV credits include CSI: NY and 8 simple rules.
York is not the only one Bureau Alum we’ve lost in recent years: Hugh Dane, who played Hank’s security guard in the NBC comedy, died in 2018 at the age of 75.
