An Alberta woman in her 50s has died after receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, according to the province’s chief medical officer of health.

In a press release issued Tuesday evening, Dr Deena Hinshaw said the death had been confirmed to be related to “vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT)”.

Hinshaw said for reasons of patient privacy, she would not provide additional information on the case.

“While any death is tragic, it is important to remember that the risks of dying or suffering other serious consequences from COVID-19 remain far greater than the risk following the AstraZeneca vaccine,” she said. .

“The Alberta case marks the second case of VITT and the only VITT-related death out of more than 253,000 doses of AstraZeneca or CoviSHIELD / AstraZeneca that have been administered in Alberta to date.

Hinshaw noted that the worldwide frequency of VITT has been estimated to be approximately one in 100,000 to 250,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine.

Ils sont également au moins 1 500 fois plus susceptibles d'être hospitalisés pour COVID-19 que de souffrir de VITT après avoir reçu AstraZeneca. »
