EDMONTON – Alberta expanded its COVID-19 vaccine eligibility list on Monday to add teachers, school support staff and educators.

Bus drivers, guards and teaching assistants are part of the expansion group, which can start making appointments on Tuesday.

In a two-word statement responding to the announcement, Alberta Teachers’ Association President Jason Schilling said, “It’s about time.”

Proof of employment will not be required, Premier Jason Kenney said.

The premier also announced that Banff and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo would receive an additional 20,000 doses of the vaccine and lower eligibility for anyone 18 years of age and over.

“This vaccine is our ticket out of the pandemic and back to normal, but right now it’s not enough,” Kenney said. “Cases and hospitalizations are increasing faster than our vaccines arrive. We have to turn around in the next few weeks. “

“This choice is the best protection available,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw. “The more we choose the vaccine, the closer we get to replacing the currently needed protection of public health measures with the protection of vaccines. “

Alberta Health Services had administered 1.6 million doses of the vaccine by the end of Sunday.

“I hope that later this week we can proceed with the full Phase 3 of Alberta’s immunization program, which will affect all adult Albertans,” Kenney said.
