These young space enthusiasts will be challenged through a series of fun and engaging activities, ranging from using a real rover on a simulated lunar mission, to solving problems from Earth to Earth. using satellite images and training with astronauts and space fitness experts. The camp will offer them a unique chance to learn space careers as well as the scientific, physical and leadership qualities they will need to develop if they strive to participate in a future mission to the Moon.
Participants were selected by random draw from a pool of eligible applicants who had previously completed Junior Astronaut online activities in three streams – Science and Technology, Fitness and Nutrition, and Teamwork and Communication – which represent the different types of knowledge and skills needed by astronauts.
Through initiatives like Junior Astronauts, the CSA and its partners inspire the next generation of Canadians to reach for the stars and encourage their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
- The winners are:
- 27 girls; 25 boys
- nine participants from Northern Canada
- 18 participants from Western Canada
- 25 participants from Eastern Canada (including six francophones from three provinces)
- The activities of the junior astronauts are aimed at children in Grades 6 to 9 (Secondary 6 to 3 in Québec). They were designed to be run by schools or youth organizations.
- The Junior Astronaut Campaign was first announced by the Premier of Canada in February 2019.
