13 coronavirus cases confirmed among staff at Toronto quarantine hotel near Pearson Airport – fr

Toronto Public Health said 13 staff members tested positive for COVID-19 at a Toronto airport hotel where travelers are required to self-quarantine after arriving in the country.

The Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport hotel is currently used as a federal quarantine site for travelers entering Canada from overseas and is managed by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

“This morning there are 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among hotel staff,” Toronto Public Health said in a statement released Tuesday evening. “TPH has given instructions to staff members who have tested positive and to those who are considered close contact.”

The statement went on to say that “the risk to the public remains low” as the hotel is a designated quarantine facility that is not open to the general public.

Local and federal officials carried out on-site inspections at the hotel on Tuesday, a day after reporters spoke to Toronto’s top doctor, Eileen de Villa, about reported cases of COVID-19 at the quarantine hotel.

In its Tuesday statement, Toronto Public Health said the hotel had already complied with all of its recommendations.

“This inspection found that there was strong adherence to public health measures and opportunities for improved infection prevention and control were noted, including further reduction in dining room capacity, the display of additional panels and the centralization of personnel control, ”the statement read.

A Section 22 order issued by de Villa last month gives the health unit the power to partially or completely shut down a workplace where at least five cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the past 14 days .

TPH said in a statement that the hotel would not be closed completely because it “provides an essential service to keep Torontonians safe,” but left the door open for possible partial closure.

“Given that COVID-19 and the more transmissible variants of concern continue to circulate in the community, it is not surprising that there are cases of COVID-19 at this facility or any workplace in the city, ”the press release read. “That’s why it’s more important than ever to limit interactions to household members and only leave the house when absolutely necessary.”

All international travelers entering Canada must stay in a government-approved quarantine hotel for three nights while awaiting the result of a COVID-19 test taken after landing in the country.
