Warner Bros. cancels Ava DuVernay's

Ava DuVernay New gods et James Wan’s The trench are no longer in development at Warner Bros., according to Hollywood journalist, Deadline and variety. Both films, which were set to explore two of the more unusual parts of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), appeared to have been interesting diversions from the tone and style established in films like Justice League and Batman vs. Superman. But in the turbulent world of DC film adaptations, nothing is certain.

James Wan pivoted to superhero movies with Aquaman in 2018, bringing action-packed and a little more wacky energy to a cinematic universe that sorely needed something fun. The film was meant to focus on the spooky deep sea fish kingdom that Aquaman teamed up with in Wan’s original DC film.

New gods could have been even more critical in building the DCEU, exploring New Genesis, the home planet of the New Gods and rival Darkseid, who is essentially the Thanos of the DC comics. DuVernay reportedly was the first woman of color to direct a DC superhero movie New gods went ahead. Love and basketball Director Gina Prince-Bythewood also made history when she was attached to directing a Spider-Man spinoff. Now both projects have been canceled.

As is often the case in Hollywood, just because either of the projects is no longer in development doesn’t mean that DuVernay or Wan can’t come back or won’t continue to play with the toys in. Superhero shape from WarnerMedia. In a statement provided to the press, Warner Bros. stated that she looked forward to the continuation of her partnership and that “[New Gods and The Trench] will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future. ”
