John Travolta was hounded by conspiracy theories and an alleged blackmail plot after the tragic death of his son Jett.
The actor and his late wife Kelly Preston, who died last year from a battle with breast cancer, were on vacation with their children in 2009 when Jett died.

Today would have been his 29th birthday.

Jett, who has autism, suffered an epileptic seizure while his family got away from the Bahamas over the New Years holidays.

He had a history of seizures and collapsed in the bathroom and hit his head, before being pronounced dead in hospital.

The trip turned into a tragedy for Kelly and John, 67, who is also Ella and Benjamin’s father.

And thereafter, the torment continued as he was plagued by rumors and conspiracy theories about the level of care Jett received on the day he died.

Critics have raised concerns about the family’s dedication to Scientology, with speculation suggesting that the controversial church does not recognize conditions such as autism, and that this may have played a role.

It later emerged that John had surrendered to police claiming he was the victim of a £ 20million blackmail plot.

The Grease star alleged that an ambulance driver called to look after Jett and his lawyer blackmailed him over a compensation form the actor signed.

The ambulance driver claimed John and his team were worried about the circumstances surrounding Jett’s collapse and wanted him to be airlifted to a medical center in Florida rather than being taken to a hospital 15 minutes away. .

The driver and his lawyer denied the extortion charges and the case went to trial, where it was alleged that they demanded millions in exchange for the compensation form.

The form was said to prove John refused to send his son to a local hospital before changing his mind.

As the jury stepped out to deliberate, the judge ruled to order a new trial after a Bahamian politician went on television to claim that one of the defendants had been found not guilty even before the verdict was released. be returned.

A new trial was put in place but John later decided to drop the case, saying he did not want to return to the Bahamas to testify and his family wanted to move on.

He said in a statement at the time: “The long-pending status of this case continued to weigh heavily on my family, leading us to conclude that it was finally time to put this issue behind us.

“Therefore, after careful consideration, I have concluded that it is in the best interests of my family that I do not voluntarily return to the Bahamas to testify a second time at trial. “

The charges against the two men were subsequently dropped.
