A case could be made in each of the last two NFL seasons that Pittsburgh Steelers point guard TJ Watt was the league’s best defensive player. And now, according to Bleacher Report, he’s ready to get paid that way.

They released their list of 2022 free agents ready to be paid and Watt was the big hit of the group. They think Watt’s new contract will be around five years and $ 140 million.

That would put him ahead of Los Angeles Chargers edge runner Joey Bosa, but slightly behind Chicago Bears edge Khalil Mack in terms of total contract value. But on average, Watt’s $ 28 million per season would be the best in the NFL.

If there’s one place where the Bleacher Report article misses the mark, that’s pretty much where Watt will sign. The chances of a team outbidding Pittsburgh in the next offseason for Watt’s services with the huge salary cap they will have are long. If it weren’t for the huge reduction in the salary cap this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pittsburgh would have tried to get an elaborate extension this offseason.
