Starlink has opened pre-orders for its service in February for a $ 99 deposit, but it doesn’t look like the company is considering offering a tiered plan to people who were hoping for certain options.

SpaceX PResident Gwynne Shotwell, speaking at a 2021 LEO Satellite Digital Forum panel on Tuesday, said she “doesn’t think we’re going to do tiered consumer pricing” for Starlink’s satellite internet service. CNBC. Shotwell added that the company “will try to keep things as simple as possible and transparent as possible, so at this time there are no plans to prioritize consumers.”

This could be a solution for potential subscribers who were hoping for a lower-priced – or even more premium – version of the service than the one it currently offers. The $ 99 refundable security deposit offer that drove in February does not cover the full cost of the service.

L’installation Starlink kit fee $ 499 and includes a power supply, wifi router and mountable satellite dish. Shipping and handling will add at least an additional $ 50 to this price. And then there is the service itself, which costs $ 99 per month. This could make the service less accessible, for example, low income households in rural areas. And these customers could be better served through Starlink’s satellite service than they could with 5G.

But that’s what Shotwell said Starlink is trying to serve, saying the company “will be able to serve every rural household in the United States,” according to CNBC, or roughly 60 million people.

G / O Media can get a commission

If so, it looks like Starlink needs to seriously reassess its upfront costs.
