The fallout from Germany’s shocking 2-1 defeat to North Macedonia will be dealt with for some time to come, but the pain of the loss will undoubtedly be felt by the players far longer than by the fans.
For Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry the game was defined by the lost chances Germany had throughout the game.
“Compliments to North Macedonia. We came back, gained opportunities, but we didn’t get it in front (of the net). Then that wasn’t enough in the end, ”said Gnabry (captured by the DFB).
As for Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan, the midfielder knows such a defeat should never happen.
“We all know we can’t lose a game like this. The way we conceded the goals was poor, ”said Gündogan, team captain while Manuel Neuer was away (captured by DFB). “This is not what we expect of ourselves and there is no explanation for it. We all need to be peak form by the end of May. ”
Missed opportunities, lack of precision and sloppy defense were evident throughout the competition and Germany will surely have a lot to improve on as they prepare for what will be a very difficult competition for Euro 2020.
