Jamal Lowe celebrates after scoring his third goal in two games

Swansea City closed the gap to automatic promotion spots as Sheffield Wednesday suffered another heavy blow in their attempt to avoid relegation.

Jamal Lowe took advantage of a defensive error to put Swansea ahead, before Jay Fulton’s header sealed a 2-0 victory for Steve Cooper’s side.

Swansea are seven points behind second-placed Watford with five games to go, the last one at Vicarage Road.

The Owls remain deeply in difficulty in 23rd, seven points from safety.

It wasn’t the return to the dugout that Darren Moore hoped to have missed in Wednesday’s last three games after testing positive for coronavirus.

His side beat Cardiff City 5-0 in their previous home game but saw any confidence gained from that triumph shattered by this loss and last Saturday’s heavy loss to Queens Park Rangers.

Moore’s men competed for long spells against Swansea, although they were almost canceled early on when Andre Ayew burst forward only to shoot into the side net.

Wednesday had chances, with Jordan Rhodes heading for a corner and Josh Windass putting too much on a lob attempt on either side of a powerful Liam Shaw drive who was brilliantly saved by Freddie Woodman.

But it was the visitors who took control when Tom Lees let Barry Bannan’s pass pass through him and Ayew took the opportunity to gain possession.

Swansea’s top scorer chose to square the ball rather than shoot, giving Lowe time and space to guide a soaring shot past recalled Keiren Westwood and into the net.

Cooper’s side have lost only once this season after taking the lead, while Wednesday is the only league club yet to take a point in a game in which they have fallen behind.

The hosts started the second period on a positive note as they attempted to change that record, with Windass cutting dangerously inside only for slippery Ryan Bennett to block his shot.

But Swansea gradually regained the initiative, with Westwood making a nice save to deny Ayew before the second goal arrived.

Substitute Connor Roberts played a central role, feeding Lowe on the sideline before moving down the left flank to receive a return pass.

The Welsh international then buckled a perfect cross at the far post for Fulton to dismiss Bannan and come home.

Swansea’s second straight away win means they remain hopeful of finishing in the top two in the Championship, while the bottom image looks grim for Wednesday as both teams immediately above have matches in hand.
