Private coach John Beck, a former NFL quarterback who played for then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington, worked with Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields this offseason. Beck remains close to Shanahan and has worked with North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance for the past few weeks. It’s no coincidence.

Fields and Lance are among the prospects most likely to be selected No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reports that Lance worked with Beck at the request of the Niners.

San Francisco provided Beck with a list of drills they wanted to see from Lance, meaning they were heavily involved in planning Monday’s practice.

Other teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, are also expected to attend on Monday.

“I know how he’s going to coach the quarterfinals,” Beck said of Shanahan recently in an interview with The Athletic. “I know what he’s looking for. So I think that’s an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for the quarterfinals. San Francisco’s heavy involvement in planning Lance’s second professional day could indicate the team are really serious about the former Bison being an option for the No.3 pick.
The 2021 NFL Draft begins April 29 in Cleveland, Ohio.

It’s been almost two weeks since NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein released his latest simulation project. In it, he had the San Francisco 49ers selecting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick instead of Justin Fields of Ohio State or Mac Jones of the Alabama. It doesn’t appear that his opinion of what head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should do on April 29 has changed. While Zierlein’s colleagues Steve Wyche and Maurice Jones-Drew made excellent arguments for Fields to be San Francisco’s choice, Zierlein retained his choice of Lance and defended the decision in an NFL segment. Network. “He’s the guy San Francisco should be

Justin Fields of Ohio state will host a second professional training session on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance of North Dakota State will compete in his second. The two are trying to make sure they are selected before Mac Jones of Alabama. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence is expected to be ranked No.1 overall. The New York Jets are expected to select BYU’s Zach Wilson at No.2. Assuming San Francisco targets a quarterback, that leaves Jones, Fields and Lance as San Francisco’s picks at No.3. Jones is the overwhelming favorite. to be the choice if you ask members of the national media. Fans would much prefer the more athletic, capped outlook in Fields or Lance.
