Prince Charles received the terrible news that his father had passed away on the day he was due to celebrate his wedding anniversary with Camilla.

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall married in 2005 and are therefore said to have celebrated 16 years together.

Instead, they’ll mourn the loss of Royal Patriarch Phillip, who died this morning at the age of 99.

The part of his website for him and Camilla was unavailable, with a tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh instead.

Just two weeks ago, they traveled to Greece for a two-day visit celebrating the 100th anniversary since the start of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.

At the time, Charles had mentioned his father at an official dinner: “My wife and I could not be more delighted to be back in Greece, which has long held the most special place in my heart.

“After all, Greece is my grandfather’s land; and from the birth of my father, almost a hundred years ago, the centenary year of Greek independence.

Phillip was at Windsor Castle after returning the following weeks to the hospital. It is not yet clear what other family members other than the Queen were there.

Charles was pictured with tears in his eyes in February as he arrived at King Edward VII Hospital in London to visit his father as he was admitted for treatment.

“Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

“Further announcements will be made in due course.

“The Royal Family join people around the world in mourning their loss. “

The Duke’s death comes amid the worst public health crisis in generations as the UK and countries around the world recover from the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

It also came in the wake of Oprah’s interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell that left the monarchy in crisis after Meghan accused an anonymous royal of racism and the institution of failing to helping her when she was suicidal.

Philip had returned to Windsor Castle on March 16 to reunite with the Queen after spending a month in hospital – her longest stay.

He was first treated for an infection and then underwent heart surgery for a pre-existing condition.

The Duke looked gaunt as he was kicked out of King Edward VII Hospital in central London, after being pushed in a wheelchair to the waiting car.

Philip – father of the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex – was only two months away from his 100th birthday in June.

He spent much of the Covid-19 crisis staying with the Queen in Windsor in HMS Bubble – the nickname given to the couple’s small family in dedicated staff during the lockdown.
