Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed that he is recovering from malaria after contracting the disease while on international service with Gabon.

The Arsenal captain missed Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League victory at Sheffield United and was also out for the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Slavia Prague on Thursday night.

Arsenal had said Aubameyang was missing for “illness”, without going into details.

But, moments before his teammates kick off in the Czech capital, Aubameyang posted the news of his illness on Instagram.

“Hey guys, thanks for all the messages and calls,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately, I contracted malaria while I was in the national team in Gabon a few weeks ago.

“I spent a few days in the hospital this week, but I already feel much better every day, thanks to the excellent doctors who detected and treated the virus so quickly.

“I didn’t really feel myself the last two weeks but I will come back stronger than ever!

“I’m going to watch my boys now, a huge game for us!” Let’s go get him @arsenal. “

Aubameyang played in the first leg against Slavia, coming off the bench to score a Nicolas Pepe goal in the 1-1 draw.

But, following his diagnosis of malaria, it remains to be seen how long he will stay away from now on.
