Three fissure vents at the current eruption site of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (image: OVPF)
The effusive eruption of the volcano continues.
A new crack vent opened to the current eruptive fissure as reported by the Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF) in its latest bulletin.
The eruptive fissure currently consists of one larger main vent and two smaller ones.
The two-vented fountain continues to build the ash cones.
The lava, keeping the flow active, continues to move towards the Grandes Pentes on the southern slope.
The presence of ascending degassed magma inside the conduits of the volcano may indicate the gradual increase in the rate of discharge of the lava flow from April 9 to 13.
Gas and vapor emissions from glowing plumes, visible at night, have increased 800 m to 1,100 m above the eruptive fissure and drifted southwest.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions continue at high levels.
The instruments continue to detect slight deformations of the soil related to the emptying of the shallow magma chamber located under the Dolomieu crater at depths between 1.5 and 2 km, currently feeding the eruptive site.
