Isaiah Thomas’ 10-day contract with the New Orleans Pelicans has expired and the team have no immediate plans to sign him for a second deal, a source told ESPN on Tuesday morning.

Thomas, however, could be in the Pelicans’ plans at a later date.

New Orleans have two weeks before they need to add another player to the roster – with a 10-day contract or the rest of the season. For luxury tax reasons, the team could choose to wait the full two weeks before adding a player. Recent injuries to guards Josh Hart (torn UCL right thumb) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (high left ankle sprain) could force the Pelicans to end up going in a different direction once they make that signing.

On Monday, New Orleans added 6-foot-7-wing James Nunnally on a two-way contract to help fill that void.

Thomas has played three games for New Orleans, averaging 7.7 points. He received a rousing standing ovation from fans in Monday’s victory over the Sacramento Kings – his only home game with New Orleans he’s played.

“I haven’t met a veteran more grateful to have the opportunity to play in the league all my time in the league. He’s been amazing here, ”Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy said after Monday’s game. “To see him come in, even for a few minutes, take a shot, get the fans’ appreciation, I hope he heard it. Often times you don’t when you are playing. I hope he heard. I hope he enjoyed it, because he certainly deserved it.

“I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to train him even for a very short period of time. “

After the game, Thomas took to the court for about 25-30 minutes to get additional shots before retiring to the locker room.

Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram called Thomas “the ultimate professional.”

“He just came in and did his job every time he was in the basketball game but also on the bench,” Ingram said. “He was giving advice, talking to our younger kids, cheering us on whether or not he was in the game. It’s also a big part of our team. ”
