Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no plans to move Mason Greenwood into a Manchester United center-forward role at the moment, insisting his game is better suited to play wide.
Greenwood has been tipped to end up becoming a striker at United, but Solskjaer believes any transition to a central role is still at least a few years away for the academy graduate.

The 19-year-old has returned to form in front of goal in recent weeks, but Solskjaer believes his all-round game has improved significantly this season, despite not getting the same accolades he did last season.

Greenwood now has 24 goals for United in 96 appearances and Solskjaer has consistently praised his finishing ability, but he says there is more to his game than just goals.

Warning not to move him too early to center, Solskjaer explained how evading the attentions of center-backs is currently helping Greenwood thrive.

“Mason isn’t just a natural finisher – he’s a natural footballer. He’s so smooth and he’s matured so much this season, ”Solskjaer said.

“You can see his body has grown and he’s getting stronger. His consistency is improving more and more and he will start to score more goals for sure.

“I was really impressed and happy with his development this season. He went through this difficult time as a stronger person and a better player.

“Maybe in the future he can play as a central striker, but I still think it’s a few years away.

“Being a center-forward in the Premier League is probably the most difficult position to play.

“For the moment, I think Mason is better suited to play this great role, to drop in the pockets, to find space and to run behind.

“I don’t want him to be back to goal and have two central defenders at the back. I think we’ve found a good way to develop him, but he might end up being a No.9. ”

Greenwood had an elite center-forward to learn this season from Edinson Cavani, who brought his tally for United to nine with a goal against Granada on Thursday night.

United are still awaiting a decision for the 34-year-old on whether he intends to stay at Old Trafford for a second season, but Solskjaer believes the master and apprentice have formed a good relationship this season.

When United signed Cavani in October last year, Solskjaer mentioned his experience and he hopes Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have benefited from the experience of playing for the Uruguayan.

“Playing with Edinson Cavani was a great example. Edi leads by example even though the language barrier made it a bit difficult, ”he said.

“But Mason and Edi have forged a very good relationship. I can see that Edi really appreciates Mason’s talent, his hunger and his willingness to learn.

“And at Edinson Cavani, he’s learning from one of the best.

“It’s like when I talk about having Sir Alex Ferguson as my manager. If I couldn’t learn from him, it was no use getting into management.

“If Mason, Marcus and Anthony can’t learn from Edinson, they can’t learn from anyone.

“He’s a very good example for all of them. “
