Paul Scholes spoke about Manchester United and Chelsea’s chances of signing Erling Haaland saying they are the only clubs that can afford the Borussia Dortmund striker this summer.
Haaland is already considered one of the best players in world football and is linked with many top European clubs ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
The Norway international has scored 49 goals in 51 appearances for Dortmund, helping the Bundesliga club reach the Champions League quarter-finals this season.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City have all been heavily linked with Haaland’s moves, but Scholes believes Man United and Chelsea are in a better position to sign the 20-year-old.
‘I think it’s a question of which club can [afford to] pay for it now. I don’t think there are too many who can, ”Scholes told BT Sport.
“You think of Real Madrid and Barcelona, and all those noises you hear, but they probably couldn’t pay that money.
“Man City don’t seem to want to pay this money. And Pep Guardiola rarely plays a number nine, anyway.
“Even when he had Aguero and Jesus in good shape, he barely played them, so is this the type of player Guardiola wants? I am not sure this is the case.
“Look, he’s a player Man United and Chelsea desperately need and these are probably the two clubs that I think could afford to pay for that this summer. “
Scholes added: “I think they [Manchester United] are desperate for this number nine. Haaland is the most obvious, or Harry Kane, of these types of players.
Will they come to Manchester United at this point? Can Manchester United bring them here this summer? I think they probably can. But both will have the choice of any club in Europe.
Asked if he could see Manchester United spending £ 150million on a new striker this summer, Scholes replied: “I think they probably would, yes. Look, he’s a player United desperately need.
Owen Hargreaves, meanwhile, doesn’t think Haaland will base his next move on money and instead research which club is the “best fit” for him.
“He’s taken real, thoughtful steps throughout his career. I don’t think it will be about the money for Haaland, ”said the former England midfielder.
“It’s going to be about finding the right person. Is it Manchester City? Or Manchester United? Or Barcelona? I can’t think of a player as young as everyone covets.
Scholes and Hargreaves were speaking after Manchester United beat Granada 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.
