“I think it was way ahead of its time. You watch it now and it resonates so much with the moment we’re in, but back then I think it was hard for people to really appreciate the satire that it was. Rosario Dawson, who played the role of Valérie, said of the film which is still often cited to this day: DUJOUR MEANS FAMILY! The quote is even paid homage by independent film fashion labels like Super Yaki, which featured hoodies and even embellishments based on it during one of their limited series.

Rachael Leigh Cook played the part of Josie and was brought in by film directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, she reflected on the set, “As an experience, [it was] many women supporting women from day one to this day.

Co-director Tara Reid echoed this sentiment as she looked back, “It meant so much to us. When we made this film, we had the best time of our lives. One of our directors was also a woman. So it’s kind of changed. And that was before there was such an influence now, but in a lot of ways I feel like we started this game.

Upon release, Josie and the Pussycats has been compared to World of spices, although moviegoers later battle to reclaim it as a cult classic. The film shares more DNA with another cult film about the pop music industry: Brian De Palma Phantom of paradise, especially in the way he dives into the soul-selling world of subliminal messages to conform to capitalism rather than individualism. Mondo posted an impression of the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack on vinyl that you can pre-order here. Matthew Libatique, director of photography for the film, would later work on Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper A star is born and Cathy Yan’s Birds of prey with Margot Robbie. Josie and the Pussycats may have been a model for Birds of prey.

Both on screen and behind the scenes, the film’s teamwork really made the film shine as young women glued together even as the Fame Machine tried to eat and chew them. It was all about friendship, and Rosario thinks the movie transcends time because of it, “There’s scene after scene after scene that wasn’t about the way men were in our lives. It wasn’t all those other things. It was about us, our dreams and our passions. And seeing these men supporting these women and wanting to see them shine. And watch them grow up in front of you and be amazed by it. It’s just that there are so many levels in it that are really, really deep looking back through the prism of now.
