Dean Henderson decided to wear a new look as Manchester United faced Burnley.

It is not often that sunlight is a problem in English football. At Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, the United goalkeeper decided that was the case and he was wearing a baseball cap to help him see better.

The baseball cap didn’t help Henderson keep James Tarkowski’s lead in the second half, but that didn’t matter as United scored three goals himself.

Mason Greenwood (2) and Edinson Cavani were on track to secure the three points.

Henderson was aiming for practicality rather than style with his baseball cap, and after sharing a photo on Instagram after the game, he ended up being compared to former Liverpool and Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, by his England teammate Jack Grealish.

One of United’s most famous goalkeepers wore a hat

Dean Henderson’s baseball cap was a different style from the flat cap Harry Gregg wore at the 1958 World Cup.

Gregg survived the Munich air disaster and played more than 200 league games for United, before passing away last year.

The use of caps by United’s goalkeepers has been more sporadic than regular over the years.

Henderson’s decision to wear one may be a one-off, or it could be something we’ll see a few times before the season ends, as the weather warms up.

As long as United keep winning, it won’t matter too much. Henderson is United’s first choice, having passed David de Gea.

The game against Burnley was an uncomfortable afternoon as it often is for goalies. Henderson was lucky early on after being beaten to the head by Chris Wood, only to see the goal ruled out for offside.

If the goal had been maintained, he would have preferred to wear a balaclava to spare his redness than a baseball cap.
