George Floyd crushed to death under duress of vice, court doctor told

Mr Floyd died because he couldn't get enough oxygen, court heard

George Floyd died because he was trapped in a “vice-like” restraint by officers and couldn’t get enough oxygen, a world-famous doctor told a court.
The lung specialist gave dramatic testimony during the trial of former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin on Thursday.

Chauvin, 45, was sacked after the fatal arrest of George Floyd, 46, on May 25 last year.

Dr. Martin Tobin explained to the US court how “four main forces” led to Mr. Floyd’s death:

  • Because he was inclined in the street
  • He had handcuffs in place that had come up.
  • Because he had a knee on his neck.
  • And because he had a knee on his back and on his side.

The respected Irish-born doctor, who outside the audience is described as a ‘supreme scholar’, said Mr Floyd was ‘stuck’ and ‘crushed’ between the officers and the street.

He said that “shallow breaths” led to his death.

“It was almost as if a surgeon had walked in and removed the lung,” he told the court.

The jury was shown the exact time of Mr. Floyd’s death as the officer knelt on his neck.

The doctor pointed out the twinkle in his eyes just before “life came out of his body”

“The knee remains on the neck for another three minutes and 27 seconds after taking his last breath,” he told the court.

“After there is no pulse, the knee stays on the neck for another 2 minutes and 44 seconds. After the police found each other, there was no pulse. “

He testified that Mr. Floyd showed signs of brain injury five minutes before Derek Chauvin raised his knee.

Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell asked, “What is your opinion on the cause of Mr. Floyd’s death? “

Dr Tobin replied: “Mr. Floyd died of low oxygen and it damaged his brain… an arrhythmia that caused his heart to stop. ”

He said it was “called asphyxiation”, but he feels that “we are really talking about low oxygen levels”.

The court heard that Mr Floyd had existing health problems, including a tumor that could lead to sudden death.

But the Dr added: ‘A healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would be dead. “

Describing the effect of a knee on your neck, he said, “When you have to breathe through a narrow passage, it’s like breathing through a straw, but it’s much worse than that.

Speaking of all the pressure on Mr Floyd, he said: “There was virtually very little opportunity for him to circulate air through the left side of his chest.

“They put the handcuffs on her back and push them high and on the other side you have the street. It is against a hard asphalt street.

“His left side is in a vise. It was totally pushed in, squeezed on either side. He’s crushed.

“The street also plays an important role.”

He agreed with the prosecutor who called him a “pancake”.

The accused, he said, was kneeling around Mr. Floyd’s neck for 90% of the nine minutes and 29 seconds filmed.

While his left knee was on Mr. Floyd’s back 57% of the time.

He said low oxygen levels caused Mr Floyd’s brain damage in five minutes and three seconds.

“For four minutes and 51 seconds, from the moment there was a knee on his neck, he made vocal sounds.

“You can’t speak without an active brain,” he said.

But he said you then see a seizure where Mr. Floyd’s leg straightens up.

He said, “This is something that we as clinicians see in patients when they have brain damage due to low oxygen levels.”

The jury also saw a photo of Mr. Floyd pressing his knuckle against the steering wheel of the police car.

He explained, “This is extremely important because it tells you that he has exhausted his resources and is now literally trying to breathe with his fingers and knuckles…

“It’s the only way to get air into his right lung. “

And in another image, we see his face “sunk” into the road and Mr. Floyd trying to “pull up” his chest to try to get some hair out.

The doctor told the jury to touch their necks as he tried to describe what had happened to Mr. Floyd.

The judge told them that they did not have to follow these instructions, but almost all of them did.

Mr Floyd, 46, has warned dozens of times that he cannot breathe as the officer knelt on his neck after being arrested for allegedly using a fake $ 20 bill.

Chauvin denies all charges against him, which are unintentional second degree murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter.

Three other officers will face separate trials.
