Gareth Southgate has warned he will not tolerate any player derailing England’s Euro campaign by breaking strict Covid rules.
England midfielder James Maddison was sacked by Leicester last weekend after attending a home party which could put an end to his hopes of entering the squad this summer.

This is on top of the fact that Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden were kicked out of Iceland in disgrace after inviting girls to the team hotel while Ben Chilwell, Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham also broke protocols after they were photographed at a pre-service party in England in October.

Southgate admitted he was still annoyed by the “distractions” which he said cost England a place in the Nations League finals and said he will not allow a repeat before the summer, although the lockdown will be relaxed over the next few months.

Three Lions boss Southgate said: “As summer arrives we have to make sure we get to the camp giving ourselves the best chance to focus on football and that helps create a more footballing environment. calm so that everyone can participate in the tournament.

“I’m obviously very aware that Leicester handled the situation brilliantly and that they have a huge game on Sunday so I don’t think I should talk about specifics.

“In the end, we had problems ourselves in the fall. It is always very difficult for the coaches to manage. It puts you in really difficult positions. I can only compare that with the month of March when we arrived without dramas in the camp.

“It’s just a much better environment to prepare for football. We just had to make decisions about football, prepare the team, talk about football topics. I think for all the coaches and all the teams when we entered the tournament in Russia we had minimal distractions.

“This is something I told the players about after the fall. In the fall, the discipline off the pitch and on the pitch really created the biggest problems for us and kept us from making it to the Nations League semi-finals in which we were desperate.

“It still bothers me when I watch this line-up – Italy, Spain, Belgium, France. It’s brilliant training and games you want to be in. One of the key points was that we did not have player availability at certain times for offenses on and off the field.
