NEW YORK CITY – New variants of the highly infectious coronavirus now account for more than 70% of new cases in New York, but are prevalent in different boroughs, according to a new study.

A study released Monday by city health officials provides detailed insight into the spread of two variants of the coronavirus in the boroughs.
The growth of B.1.1.7 – the ‘UK variant’ – and the local B.1.526 variant could explain the city’s recent and persistent COVID-19 levels, according to the study of the Department of Health report and of Mental Hygiene.
“This suggests the spread of specific variants, potentially due to their greater contagiousness, which is one of the reasons COVID-19 cases in New York City remain at a high plateau between 3,000 and 4,000 new cases each. day, ”says the study.

Both variants are found in all five boroughs, but each is more common in specific areas, according to the study.

The British variant is slightly more common in southern Brooklyn, eastern Queens and Staten Island, according to the study. A map shows the postcodes 11004 and 11005 in Queens, which cover Glen Oaks and Floral Park, have between 80 and 100 percent prevalence – the highest in the city.

Likewise, ZIP 10018 covering the Garment District and parts of Midtown, also appears to have this prevalence of 80 to 100 percent.

The B.1.526 variant is slightly more common in the Bronx and parts of Queens, according to the study.

The 10,471 zip codes, which cover North Riverdale, appear to have the highest prevalence between 60 and 80 percent, according to the map.
