Family of Briton missing after ISIS attack in Mozambique says he is likely to be dead


Britain’s Philip Mawer is believed to have died in an ISIS attack in Mozambique, his employer RA International has said.
The employer said a body matching his description was found.

“It appears that Philip died trying to escape siege by ISIS-linked insurgents from the Amarula Hotel,” RA International, which operated in Palma, said in a statement on behalf of his family.

A statement from his family said: “We have now been informed that the body of a man matching Philip’s description has been found.

“It appears that Philip died trying to escape the headquarters of the insurgents linked to Isis at the Amarula Hotel in Palma. ”

The statement, reported by The Times, added: “Philip was an overflowing and outgoing character who had something lovable thug about him … It was the nature of his job chosen to be in the most dangerous corners of the world. Philip’s world and career had already taken him to Somalia, Sierra Leone, Algeria.

ISIS terrorists stormed the city of Palma on Friday.

Dozens of local civilians and soldiers were killed, some beheaded, during the siege of Amarula Lodge, which serves Africa’s largest gas project.

Mr Mawer, from Somerset, was in a convoy of 17 vehicles fleeing the compound when he was ambushed.

The government of Mozambique has confirmed that dozens of people died in the attack, including seven in the ambush of the convoy, reports the Times.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq news agency, claiming its fighters had taken control of the city after days of clashes with security forces.
