“In life too, we had to get up to meet her. But his greatest and most exquisite act of bravery and generosity was to “normalize” his death.

“No real interest in self-reflection; she thought she was looking outside, not inside. This is why she was able to turn her light so brightly on others.

He also spoke of the devastation she had tragically passed away – leaving their “beautiful” children Manon and Gully “too soon”.

The actor added, “They have in them the fearlessness, the wit, the curiosity, the talent and the beauty of their mother.

“She urged us to be courageous and not to be afraid. As she repeatedly told the children, “Don’t be sad, because even though I’m about to take it away, I’ve lived the life I wanted.”

She told BBC Radio Four’s Today: “Helen wanted to be very private about her illness and I understand why. When you live in the public spotlight, you need to find a space to protect the things that are right for you.

“Very few people knew that, and I only did it because we were planning to transfer a show to Broadway and had to cancel it because it was in treatment. We have sworn to secrecy.

“Her need to be fully alive and engaged and to take things very seriously, like her family and her charitable work, defined her final years for her more than ever.
