Surge tests are being rolled out in parts of south London after 44 cases of the South African variant of Covid-19 were discovered.
Additional testing and genomic sequencing will take place mainly in the boroughs of Wandsworth and Lambeth.

Some 44 cases of the South African variant have been recorded in these areas, along with 30 other “probable” infections.

The first case was detected in early March and all known infected individuals are now in the process of isolating or have completed their isolation – and their contacts have been traced and asked to self-isolate.

It comes after a case of the South African strain was picked up in Hayes, west London, prompting new surge tests.

Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser for NHS Test and Trace, said the cluster of cases in south London is “significant”.

“It is really important that the people of the region play their part to prevent any spread within the local community,” she said.

“PCR tests are now available to everyone and I strongly encourage everyone, whether they live, work or travel in the boroughs, to get tested even if they have no symptoms of coronavirus. ”

This applies not only to residents, but also to people who work or travel in these areas.

Hillingdon Council also yesterday announced surge testing for over 16-year-olds living in specific parts of the UB3 postcode after a case of the South African strain was detected in Hayes.

People can book a free test online or over the phone.

Those without symptoms should visit the local authority’s website for more information.
