COVID-19: Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health orders temporary school closures

The Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph medical officer of health has decided to order the temporary closure of area schools effective Wednesday amid a “disturbing increase in COVID-19 cases among children,” officials said.

In a press release on Monday evening, health officials said Dr Nicola Mercer would issue the order on Tuesday under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

All schools in the Upper Grand District School Board, Wellington Catholic District School Board, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir and Conseil scolaire Viamonde in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph region must stop learning. in person from Wednesday, and resume no earlier than April 19.

The press release says Mercer made the decision after meeting with education directors on the boards. The order will not affect the care of children in schools.

The April break is expected to take place next week.

“I wish this step wasn’t necessary,” Mercer said.

“I know the enormous burden this places on families in our region. The growing number of cases in the province and the severity of worrying variants of COVID-19 put us all at risk.

The news comes just hours after the Region of Peel’s medical officer of health, Dr. Lawrence Loh, ordered that schools in that municipality be closed for two weeks.
