Coming to Orlinda: Several million dollars MFG installation of COVID swabs

ORLINDA TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) -Guilford Maine led Puritan Medical Products, a manufacturer of single-use products for the healthcare, diagnostics, forensics, critical environment, food safety and drug manufacturing, which will receive up to $ 146.77 million from the Ministry. Department to open a new production plant in Orlinda Tennessee, according to the Department of Defense.

On March 26, 2021, the Department of Defense (DOD), on behalf of and in coordination with the Department of Health and Social Services, awarded a contract with a not-to-exceed value of $ 146.77 million to Puritan Medical Products to increase production capacity for foam swabs used in critical diagnostic tests for COVID-19.

The global increase in COVID-19 cases continues to impact diagnostic test manufacturers and supply chains that support sample collection and test performance. This effort to expand the industrial base serves as a modification of the previous Puritan contract. This award will allow Puritan to renovate the facility and prepare space for equipment that will increase the company’s total production capacity to 250 million foam swabs per month in Orlinda, Tennessee by February 2022. .

DOD’s Defense Assisted Acquisition (DA2) cell led this effort in coordination with the Department of Air Force’s COVID-19 Acquisition Working Group (DAF ACT). This effort was funded by the Health Care Enhancement Act (HCEA) to support the expansion of the national industrial base for essential medical resources.

The new Puritan facility will be located on Barry Drive and will provide easy access to highways I65, 31W and 52. MAP This is an existing facility that will be upgraded.

Sources tell Smokey Barn News that, initially, Puritan looked at a location on Kirby Dr in Portland TN before deciding to move to Orlinda.

According to some reports, the installation will generate more than 600 jobs. With a population of around 1,000, Orlinda is sure to feel its impact.
