The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall made their first joint public appearance since Prince Philip’s death, reading cards left on floral tributes for the Duke at Buckingham Palace and other royal residences.

Charles and Camilla visited Marlborough House in central London – the home of the Commonwealth of Nations – where flowers left at the palace are taken each evening.

The couple were pictured stopping to view some of the bouquets, many of which carried emotional comments.

Remaining items include a Land Rover model similar to the one that will carry the Duke of Edinburgh’s coffin on Saturday, with “The Duke RIP” on the roof.

Prince Charles had paid tribute to his “dear dad”

Some of the notes were written directly to the Queen. One of them said: “Sending our love and condolences for the loss of your beloved Prince Philip, always yours, love Layla, Lis and Neil xxxx. “

Another quoted Her Majesty’s well-known comment about her husband, saying, “We are sorry for your profound loss. Your Majesty’s “strength and sojourn” will last forever in our hearts. “

The Earl of Wessex, meanwhile, thanked those involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize for sharing their memories of his father and their experiences with the project.

“He may have left this world, but his spirit and philosophy lives on through his prize, through every life touched, transformed, inspired – then, now and into the future,” said Edward.

Marlborough House, right next to the Mall, is a suitable place to pick up the flowers, given that Philip made over 220 solo visits to Commonwealth countries between 1949 and 2016, and many more alongside the Queen .

Previously, it appeared that members of the royal family would break with tradition and do not wear military uniform at the Duke’s funeral this weekend.

Prince harry faces being one of the only close relatives not to wear the uniform – despite having served in the military in Afghanistan – because he lost his honorary titles when he left his royal functions.
