Sharing a heartbreaking image online, too graphic for a family diary, his devastated wife Annie, 49, wrote: ‘So that’s what you did to my husband: hit him and keep hitting him until let him be depressed and unconscious.

“He’s fighting for his life after brain surgery for multiple brain bleeds.

“He’s the nicest, kindest man in the world. My 11 year old son, you also suffered a mental trauma.

“A father came to rescue his son because you started to physically injure him and throw him to the ground.”

“We have now been told to just live the day to day life.”

In a touching tribute, Alan’s 25-year-old daughter Becky urged him to ‘fight for his life’ and ‘don’t let these boys win’.

She added, “You have so much life to give and a granddaughter who needs to grow up with her ‘nan-daddy’.

“I wish I could have held your hand, but Covid decided that for us.

And in a furious explosion at the assailants, Becky stormed, “You are nasty bastards.

Four youths were arrested later that evening on suspicion of attempted murder and intentional grievous bodily harm. A fifth boy was arrested Monday accused of the same offenses.

But residents have spoken of their anger after the five men were released on bail despite “strict conditions” including curfews and not meeting.

A neighbor said: “It’s not fair that these boys bring a man to the brink of death and be released on bail a few hours later. What kind of message does this send? “

Local MP Sir Peter Bottomley said: “All members of the community extend their sincere condolences and best wishes to the two victims – the son who faced danger and the father who courageously intervened.”

It’s amazing how this fundraiser snowballed so quickly. With an initial goal of £ 500 achieved in less than a day, the initial idea was to help cover travel costs. You are all really amazing

“Police also arrested a fifth boy on Monday on suspicion of attempted murder. He was also released on bail with strict conditions.

“The police are treating this as an isolated incident. Officers will conduct increased regular high-visibility patrols in the area to reassure the community and to identify and deter further criminal behavior.
