Canadian journalist and war correspondent Matthew Fisher dies at age 66

Prolific Canadian journalist and war correspondent Matthew Fisher has died at the age of 66.

According to his brother, Tobias Fisher, the reporter died shortly after falling ill from liver disease on Saturday.

Fisher, who started out as a sports journalist, later became one of Canada’s busiest foreign correspondents – having visited more than 170 countries and covered more than 20 wars and civil conflicts.

“Wherever he went, he was always interested in reporting the personal and human side of the story,” his brother Tobias told Global News in a statement on Sunday.

“He was bold, funny, brave and kind. He will be sorely missed. “

He has already called himself a “dinosaur” and the last of his breed after living abroad for more than 43 years. From telegraph to telex to the first “Radio-Shack computers in the trash”, Fisher has had the experience of working in all media throughout his career.

Fisher had worked as a commentator for Global News on several occasions, writing on topics ranging from Canadian foreign policy to how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed lives in Asia.
