Alberta Education has confirmed approval of a request from the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District for all older students to home learn by April 19 and continue for at least two weeks.

Amid criticism that the province lacks strong supports, resources and strong school safety protocols, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange insisted that schools are safe and classrooms are not. closed only to older students in Calgary due to “operational needs” or a chronic shortage of substitute teachers.

“This meets the operational needs and the demand of these school boards. This is not a decision led by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, ”said LaGrange.

“The school reintegration plan has always included a vision to adopt a regional approach… and I simply respect the local autonomy of school boards.
