Brian McFadden’s marriage to Kerry Katona was supposed to be the pop match made in heaven, after they met on the Smash Hits tour in 1999, but it never really worked out that way.
Brian sang with Westlife while Kerry was a star in Atomic Kitten and they were married at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rathfeigh, Ireland, followed by a 250 star reception at Slane Castle on January 5, 2002.

The Irish singer, who turns 41 today, admitted their relationship showed some cracks before they married and a heartbreaking phone call ended it.

Brian had said that after joining Westlife at the age of 19, he had only kissed one other woman before meeting Kerry.

He said falling in love with him was “overwhelming” and he felt he needed to act on it without really considering the long term implications of being engaged to each other.

Speaking to The Independent in 2007, Brian said: “I was very young when I met her and no one has ever loved me before. So when Kerry came and wanted me that void was filled and I felt good just because I had someone to share everything with.

“I never stopped thinking, ‘You should really get to know this person before you have kids, think about getting married, or settling down.’

“So when we had the first baby, bought a house, spent time together and Westlife became the same over and over again, I woke up one morning and I realized, ‘That’s not what I wanna do with my life, I don’t see myself with this woman in 20 years, she’s not who I’m supposed to be with, we have nothing in common. ”

By the time of their split in 2004, Brian and Kerry had had two daughters, Molly and Lilly-Sue, who are now 19 and 17.

The moment their marriage was abruptly ended was during a tense phone call in which Brian admitted he didn’t love Kerry anymore.

He argued that the decision to separate was reciprocal, but Kerry insisted that she beg him to stay.

Brian has since said the marriage was never going to work out as he had already cheated on Kerry before they got married.

He said he had a moment with a lapdancer during his bachelor party, and that’s when he realized he wasn’t fully engaged in the relationship. with Kerry.

He said, “That stag night story started our marriage badly and if I’m being completely honest the day my marriage ended was stag night before I even got married.

“That’s when I felt, ‘This isn’t meant to be. It was the first crack and everyone saw it.

Kerry discovered these details in a journal about six months later, and she was devastated by the revelation.

Talk to the missing News of the World at the time, Kerry said, “It killed me. I loved Brian and I trusted him. I remember thinking, ‘But that’s the bulk of Westlife. Why would he do this to me? ‘ ”

Brian moved on with Australian singer Delta Goodrem after Kerry broke up.

He had met Delta when they got together for his solo single, Almost Here.

Kerry has since said that if she hadn’t appeared on Loose Women and accepted Brian’s invitation to join them in the recording studio, their lives might have taken a whole different path.

She said, “It was always my Brian this and that, and then one day Brian said to me, ‘I’m recording a new single with someone called Deltra Goodrem – come with me’, and I was like ‘I can’t come, I’m on Loose Women’. Imagine if I didn’t, I would still be married… ”

It wasn’t meeting Delta that was the real problem, Kerry reflected, saying, “If someone falls for you, there’s nothing you can do. “
