A cricketer has died on the spot after a fierce shot from a batter hit him in the head during a match in India.

Shocking footage filmed by a spectator shows the tragedy unfolding on the grounds of the Raj Nagar Extension in Ghaziabad, India’s Uttar Pradesh region on April 8.

After the quick bowler shows up for his delivery, the batter connects well with the ball, hitting it straight towards the bowler.

It is too quick for him to take an evasive action and the bullet hits him directly on the head.

The impact causes him to fall directly to the ground. A spectator screams in horror as the players rush to the player’s rescue but he dies instantly.

His death is not the first tragedy on the ground.

In November 2014, Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes was killed when he was hit in the neck by a bullet.

Hughes, 25, was hit by a bouncer while punching in a Sheffield Shield match for South Australia in Sydney, and later died in hospital from his injuries.

The ensuing investigation made a number of recommendations, some of which had already been implemented, to improve the safety of players on the pitch.

Nearfield players and wicket keepers standing at stumps have been advised to wear a protective helmet, although this does not apply to players in slips.

The report also said players and coaching staff should wear helmets at all times when practicing in the nets against fast bowlers or bowling machines.

He also said a defibrillator should be available at all first class matches in case medical staff need to deal with heart incidents.
