'You can tear up Liverpool's contract' - French striker explains why he snubbed transfer

André-Pierre Gignac explained how his love for Marseille was the reason he snubbed a move to Liverpool.
The striker scored 24 Ligue 1 goals in 38 appearances for Toulouse in the 2008/09 season, which has earned him a regular call-back to the French national team.

This impressive form has seen him linked with a move to the Reds, as well as Spain’s Valencia side.

The Spanish side tried to convince the 35-year-old to sign for them by sending him ham.

But once Gignac realized Marseille were interested, he told his agent to ‘tear up’ the contract with Liverpool because he wanted to play for his club.

“I was born in Martigues, 40 km from Marseille. All my childhood was Marseille. My family supports OM, ”he told RMC Sport.

“My dream… What you need to know, I had two contracts in my hands. It was Marseille or Liverpool in 2010.

“I refused Valence just before. They sent me a plane with good ham inside. I promise you, it makes you want to. They knew that with a little Iberian jamon they could do it, but I refused.

“It was at the time of Unai Emery, with Jérémy Mathieu. He came and explained his tactics to me. I refused them.

“Right after, Christophe Cano (his agent) came to tell me: ‘André, you have Liverpool or Marseille’.

“I replied:” You can tear up the Liverpool contract, we are going to Marseille “. That’s all “.

Gignac eventually left Marseille in the summer of 2015 for Mexican club Tigres UANlL, where he has scored 148 and assisted 36 in 254 games to date.
