When it comes to African public opinion, France's loss is Turkey's gain

Based on opinion leaders from twelve African countries, the AfricaLeads 2021 survey marked Turkey’s strong performance on the continent, while France continues to lose ground.

The AfricaLeads 2021 poll found that Turkey regularly cultivates a positive image in Africa – a rise that appears to come at the expense of France, which has seen its position on the continent steadily collapse.

In 2019, France was ranked 5th with a favorable image of 21%, before falling to 6th place in 2020 with 20%. This year he had deteriorated to 7th place with 17%.

Conversely, Turkey has gone from 8% in 2020 to 15% this year, an increase of almost 100% to rank just behind France in 8th place.

Carried out from last November to last January, the survey was prepared by the Parisian research firm IMMAR, and shared publicly during the Africa Forum 2021 organized by the French Council of Investors in Africa (CIAN).

Since 2018, more than 2,400 opinion leaders from the continent in 12 countries (Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, DR Congo, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Morocco) were asked about the situation of the continent itself, the image they have of the different countries, and those designated as the most beneficial partners.

The list of interviewees includes politicians, employers, artists, intellectuals, athletes and religious leaders. About a third are women.

Thanks to its persistent soft power on the continent, the United States continues to maintain its lead in image with 43%, although it has lost 5 points compared to last year.

It was followed by Germany with 37 percent, Canada with 34 percent, the United Kingdom with 28 percent, China with 22 percent and Japan with 19 percent.

Among the most beneficial partners, Turkey ranked sixth with 66%. China topped 74%, followed by the United States with 74%, Canada 72%, Germany with 71% and Japan with 70%.

France came ninth, with 57 percent.

Alongside Turkey, the position of the Gulf countries, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, has also improved.

On the continent itself, South Africa is the country with the best image in Africa with 40%, followed by Morocco, Ghana and Rwanda.

The increase in Turkish investments in Africa and Turkish Airlines’ commitment to expand in Africa by adding new destinations is said to have played a key role in improving Ankara’s position on the continent over the past year. .

At the same time, France’s declining influence in the eyes of the African public was alarmed by CIAN vice-president Etienne Giros.

” We have a problem. France is very present in Africa, we have a long-standing relationship which is at the same time sentimental, cultural, military, economic, diplomatic… We are one of the first countries in terms of development aid, the companies that we [CIAN] represent [contribute] 60 billion euros in turnover in Africa, and yet our image is deteriorating every year, ”he said.

“We should seriously question ourselves.”
